Emery Mine and mill, Emery Mining District, Powell County, Montana

The economic geology program changed focus in 2014 to help support and promote metallic mining, and generate interest in exploration for new mineral deposits. Future exploration by the mining industry will be focusing on deep-seated mineral resources in past producing mining districts. Geologic studies have not been conducted in most historic mining districts for over 40 years, over which time there have been many changes in mining industry economics, exploration methods, analytical techniques, data interpretation and ore deposit modeling. The MBMG’s economic geology program conducts detailed studies on mining districts and updates our understanding of the genesis of mineral resources throughout Montana. Such studies will help identify areas that may have potential for future minerals exploration. Past investigations of geophysical, geochemical, and geologic data are being incorporated into these studies and updated with new isotope geochemistry, fluid inclusion, and mineralogical data.
