The MBMG has several active
oil and gas research projects. David
Lopez, along with other researchers
from the Montana University System, is involved in the geologic aspect
of a DOE-EPSCOR-funded Reservoir Characterization Project at Rabbit Hills
field in north-central Montana.
Another DOE-funded project, "Valley-fill sandstones in the Kootenai Formation on the Crow Indian Reservation, south-central Montana" is beginning. This study focuses on the Greybull Sandstone, a known productive reservoir in south-central Montana and the northern Bighorn basin of Wyoming.
David Lopez is a member of the Potential Gas Committee, which is responsible for estimating undiscovered natural gas reserves for central Montana. The region includes the area west to the Montana Overthrust Belt and east of the Williston basin.
